Sarah Gomes kicked her way to a rare accomplishment.
As a rookie defender with the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack in 2010, Gomes was chosen as a first-team all-star in the B.C. Colleges Athletic Association. First-year players usually do more watching than playing, but Gomes was far too valuable to the WolfPack for coach Tom McManus to keep her on the sidelines.
“She really organized my defence,” McManus said. “One of my co-captains was playing right in front of her and she was still taking control and just playing perfectly. She got our defenders moving and closing people down. She did everything just right.”
Unfortunately, a concussion kept Gomes from playing in 2011, a year in which the WolfPack won the BCCAA playoff championship and competed at nationals.
